The Three Types of Liability You Face

Umbrella Liability Insurance > The Three Types of Liability You Face

Lawsuits brought against you or your family typically fall into three categories, and all three can carry serious financial consequences.

The first is property damages. If you, your child or your property – such as your car – damages someone else’s property, you could be required to pay the full cost of repair or replacement. This sounds manageable until you consider the cost of a luxury vehicle, a storefront or a piece of heavy equipment.

The second is medical expenses. You could be held responsible for the medical costs of anyone you or a family member has injured. Serious injuries – broken bones, spinal damage, long-term rehabilitation – generate bills that can run well into six figures.

The third, and often the most damaging, is pain and suffering. These awards are intended to punish you, not simply to compensate the victim. They are difficult to predict, nearly impossible to quantify in advance and frequently exceed the combined total of property damage and medical costs. A judgment that begins with $50,000 in medical bills can end with a pain and suffering award several times larger.

All three categories represent genuine financial exposure, and none of them are fully addressed by standard auto or homeowners policies alone. This is what makes umbrella liability coverage so important.
