U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

An independent federal agency established by Congress in 1934 to protect investors, maintain fair and efficient capital markets and facilitate capital formation. The SEC requires public companies to disclose financial information, oversees stock exchanges and enforces federal securities laws. It also the chief regulator for investment advisers, broker-dealers and mutual funds. See FINRA, RIA
