A 1985 law that lets employees and their families keep their employer-sponsored group health insurance for a limited time after certain life events, such as job loss, a reduction in work hours, divorce or the death of the covered employee. Coverage generally lasts 18 to 36 months. The person electing COBRA typically pays the premium, plus an administrative fee of up to 2%. See Affordable Care Act, Health Insurance
