The person who creates and transfers assets into a trust. The grantor (also called the settlor or trustor) establishes the terms of the trust and may retain certain powers over it, including the ability to change or revoke it. If the grantor retains enough control, the IRS treats it as a “grantor trust,” meaning the grantor owes income tax on the trust’s earnings. See Beneficiary
